Rest Day in Marfa, TX.
We arrived in Marfa to spent two nights at the El Cosmico campground, giving us a rest day and a chance to catch up on laundry. The campground itself had some fun things like had vintage trailers, tee pees, old style mining tents, outdoor showers, and wood-fired hot tubs.
Rick and I were in charge of dinner the second night of our stay at El Cosmico in Marfa.
The rest day gave us time to explore this interesting community. It was founded in the 1880s as a water stop because it is literally in the middle of the desert. It is known as an arts hub,
even though it is just a small west town of under 2,000. It is full of art installations all around town, as well as murals on the sides of buildings. It is also known for the Marfa lights. James and I went outside to see if we could see them , but could not. Someone here at the campground said they are only visible 40 nights a year.
Marfa is also where they filmed “Giant” (James Dean’s last film before he died) also parts of the Cohen Brothers’ film “No Country for Old Men “ and also the film “There Will Be Blood.” We visited the Hotel Paisano where the cast and crew stayed. It was a very chill day which felt good. Here are some photos of Hotel Paisano.
Several of us chose to stay in a close by hotel rather than the campground. It was great until the motel had problems and did not have water so we were forced to return to the campground for the second night. At least we had a bed and a hot shower for one night. TV
The biggest problem with our stop in Marfa was, we were there on a Monday and a lot of the town was closed. Here are some of the art installations and other town sights we were able to see.
